Back Somersault to Celebrate at Arafura Games 2009
Wed, May 13 2009
Weightlifter Davina Hughes celebrated with a back somersault at Arafura Games 2009 in Darwin today after qualifying for next month’s Junior World Championships.
The 19-year-old mail contractor from Toowoomba on the Queensland Darling Downs lifted the required 86kg in the third and final clean and jerk to book her place at the championships to be held in Bucharest.
Earlier, she had difficulty lifting 82kg but her coach Greg Hobl said this was due to a technical fault, which was quickly rectified.
He said Davina, who took up weightlifting six years ago, had been training well in recent weeks and he was confident she would qualify.
Weightlifting continues Wednesday at 12:00pm with the Women’s 58kg, 63kg and 69kg competition and the Men’s 69kg and 77kg competition.
