Favourites China Beaten by Singapore in Gold Round of Sepak Takraw at Arafura Games 2009

Fri, May 15 2009

It was a battle of the giants of Sepak Takraw at the Darwin Convention Centre Friday night when China’a national team played Singapore in both the doubles and regu events.

“The favourite was China and all throughout the competition we expected them to get gold,” said Stephen Svensson, sports coordinator for Sepak Takraw at Arafura Games 2009. “It was neck and neck all the way in both of the events but it was Singapore that picked up the vital last points.”

In the Double Sepak Takraw bronze medals went to Singapore C and Japan, with silver be won by China and the gold going to Singapore A.

In the Regu Event Singapore A won bronze, China silver and Singapore B took the gold.

“There were more than 1000 people going wild,” said Mr Svensson. “The audience did the wave and you could not hear anything but cheering when the winner was announced.”
