Filipina Tennis Champ Wants Plant at Darwin University
Fri, May 15 2009
Filipina Macy Solon, who successfully defended her Arafura Games singles title at the Gardens Tennis Centre this evening, wants to attend Charles Darwin University.
The 18-year-old is already a student at a large Roman Catholic university in Manila. She hopes to transfer to Darwin to study business management.
Playing in her third Arafura Games, Solon proved too steady to defeat a hard hitting 14-year-old Emily Webb, of Darwin, in two hours of gruelling tennis 7/5 6/3.
Webb, who will tour Indonesia next month with an Australian junior squad, battled hard to remain in the match after being down four games to love in the second set.
Solon later had to retire from the Women’s Doubles hurt with a strained leg muscle. The gold medal went to the Darwin pair Emily Woo and Emily Webb. Diana Da’Costa and Christalana Galhos of Timor Leste were awarded silver while Solon and her partner Alicina Ximeness of the Philippines received a bronze.
