NT Youngsters Scoop Medals in Swimming Finals
Sun, May 10 2009
Two young Northern Territory swimmers threw down the gauntlet to all comers today by pocketing medals in the swimming finals of Arafura Games 2009.
Thirteen-year-old Alawa teenager Stevie Nibbs took gold in the first swimming final of the Games in the 13-14-year-old 200m Backstroke with a time 2:27:38, which is a three-second personal best. She then backed up four races later to take gold in the 13-14-year-old Individual Medley with a time of 2:35:35, another three-second personal best.
Fourteen-year-old Robert Gerlach broke the Arafura Games record in the Open 200 Backstroke in his heat this morning with a time of 2:15:69, beating the 2001 record by nearly two seconds. For the second time in the one day he touched the wall in the final to break his own record with a 2:15:22, and shave two seconds off his personal best time, but sadly only managed silver to Victoria’s Eugene Tee.
The swimming continues at Casuarina Swimming Pool.
