Surprise Wins in Muaythai Finals at Arafura Games Tonight

The Muaythai competition at Arafura Games 2009 turned up some surprise wins tonight at Spectrum Stadium in the Marrara Sports Precinct.

A little known Australian competitor Joshua Primmer from Orange in NSW was as surprised as the audience at his win over Iranian champion Majid Fallah.

“It feels unbelievable to win gold here tonight,” said Mr Primmer immediately after the bout.

“The crowd was cheering like crazy and it was a big fight.

“This is my first international fight round so I’m stoked.

“Muaythai is an amazing sport and gaining so much popularity in Australia, so watch out boxing I reckon Muaythai is going to take over,” he said.

In the first bout of the evening Australians Dakida Marriage of Cooktown, Qld, and Toby Westcott of Orange, NSW, tied for gold. The next bout was an easy victory for famed Thai Muaythai fighter Anuchit Sathit over Mohammad Madadi from Iran.

Iran’s Kavel Soleymani scored a technical knockout on Australian Clayton Cook from Cooktown, Qld, to win the gold medal. The Japan’s Tatsuya Ando claimed gold over South Africa’s Kevin Pheko, and George Murray of
New Zealand went down to Akbar Karimi of Iran.

The last bout of the evening is between Madeline Ross of South Africa and Heather O’Donnell of Australia.
