Akhil beaten in Arafura Games semi-final bout

Thu, May 12 2011

Indian boxer Kumar Akhil has failed to punch his way through to the gold medal bout at the 2011 Arafura Games in Darwin.

In front of more than 400 spectators Australia's Mitat Ibrahim Balla beat Akhil in three rounds in a 24-13 points decision.

On Tuesday, after his 19-14 win against Maakal Dj, of Nauru, Akhil said: "I wouldn't say it was the best performance, but it was good enough for a victory - I believe I can do better."

But in tonight’s fight the 29-year-old, 2006 Commonwealth gold medal winner had his opponent covered in blood, but failed to land the crucial punches to win the bout.

Boxing superstar Vijender Singh watched his teammate ringside and left, clearly disappointed into the dressing rooms, to prepare for his semi-final against New Zealand’s Sam Rapira later tonight.

The fight will be broadcasted worldwide live about 9pm Australian Central Standard Time on www.arafuragames.nt.gov.au/webcast.
