Nauru’s Itte Detanamo opened a new chapter in weightlifting history by breaking five Commonwealth records in the 2011 Arafura Games.
The strongest man of this year’s Games yesterday lifted a whopping 184kg in the snatch and 229kg in the clean and jerk competition, breaking both, snatch and clean and jerk records in the 105+kg super heavy weight division.
Detanamo broke Australian lifter Christopher Rie’s clean and jerk record of 227kg by 2kg.
He also broke the total lift record of 412kg held by Australian Olympic Gold Medalist Dean Lukin since 1984.
“We are preparing for the Olympics in London, and winning here and lifting 400kg is part of that plan,” he said.
“We are on track for London.”
Detanamo beat his Delhi Commonwealth Games conqueror, Demon Kelly, who won silver with a total of 375kg – 165kg snatch and 210kg clean and jerk.
