Big boxing bouts underway

Mon, May 09 2011

The 2011 Arafura Games boxing competition kicked this afternoon, with an excited crowd cheering of the top of their lungs for their favorites.

First in the boxing ring were Fleur Logan, ACT, and Mou Kuan Un, Macau, who put up on a spectacular fight in the women’s light fly (45-48kg) that saw Logan leave the ring as the first winner in this year’s Games boxing bouts.

In the ring for the first bout in the men’s light fly (46-49kg) were Mohd Zahari, Malaysia, and Charles Keama, Papua New Guinea, who was cheered on by PNG Government Ministers and the entire PNG volleyball team.

“We love boxing,” PNG Vava’s team manger Jack Solomon Mahuru said.

“When we don’t have to be on the volleyball court, we support our boxers.

“It’s a great sport to watch, it’s really exciting, just like volleyball.”

In this morning’s volleyball match between PNG Vava and the Northern Territory the Papua New Guinea players won their third straight match, showing the competition they were keen on a 2011 Games gold medal.

“The competition is tough and we cannot rule out Macau yet, who play good volleyball,” Mr Solomon said.

“But we’re definitely here to fight for gold.”

Boxing bouts will be held until 11pm tonight at the boxing ring at Arafura Central.
