David versus Goliath: Goliath wins 11-1
Wed, May 11 2011
A slick start and goal in the first minute from tiny Territory town Borroloola set the scene for a David versus Goliath Football match against Macau at Larrakia Stadium in Darwin last night.
But the dream was short-lived.
Before half-time the national team of Macau – with a population of over 540.000 – had scored six times against the boys from Borroloola, a country town with a population of less than 1000.
Prior to the match Borroloola coach, Steven Lolias, said he was not “trying to make excuses”, but his team had still a “long way to go”.
“A lot of the boys haven’t been outside of Borroloola before – it’s a great opportunity for them to participate in the Games,” he said.
“For the boys it’s a life experience and out in the field everyone’s got a chance.
“They are raw talent, untouched, but they’ll give anything a go. They go hard, enjoy themselves, play hard – and come off with a smile.”
Macau’s polish as the more prepared side finally shone through in the end as they won the spirited match 11-1.
