Wed, May 11 2011

Queensland swimmer Jack Burnham has won gold in the 2011 Arafura Games men’s 5km and 10km open water swim at Lake Bennett this morning.

From the start Burnham swam in the leading group, together with Poland’s Michal Skrodzki and Hayden Vickers from the Cook Islands.

After three laps on the 1.66km course the 17-year-old was the first across the line for the 5km swim and another three laps later he again beat Michal Skrodzi, 24, claiming gold for both events.

Fastest female swimmer was Sarah Rouan-sim of New Caledonia.

“I’m very happy,” she said. “The water and the temperature were good and there was no wind – good conditions.”
