Emerging table tennis champs on rise
Mon, May 09 2011
Following the Arafura Games principle of ‘Emerging Champions’ two young international table tennis players have started their competition with big success – winning all three of their matches.
Haikou athletes Lin Qiuping, 14, and Cai Zhijin, 12, won all their team matches, including two wins 5 rubbers to 0 against Papua New Guinea yesterday and the Northern Territory today.
Arafura Games Sports Manager Chelsea Mulchay said: “Great success like this demonstrates that the Arafura Games focus is on emerging champions.
“It is a great opportunity for young athletes to experience international competition – providing the experience of international competition is a great stepping stone for young athletes.
“Our 2011 Arafura Games champions may well be future Olympic Games champions.”
Table Tennis events will be held at the Palmerston Recreation Centre everyday until Thursday.
