Jekel turns pistol prowess into gold

Western Australia’s Linda Jekel has won her first gold medal in her first Arafura Games, beating Territory’s own Jo Hutchinson by less than one point.

Before competing in the finals for the 25m Ladies Sports Pistol, Jekle said she was going to try her “very best”.

“I’m in for a win,” she said.

“But the competition is good, it will be hard.”

After four rounds and a final round Jekel led the score board with a total of 737.90 points, just ahead of Hutchinson with 737.20 and NT’s Karen Sinel, 713.60.

Earlier in the day the women’s team from Western Australia beat the NT Old Tarts and Macau.

The NT Junior Sports Pistol team was beaten by Malaysia, with 1556 – 464 points.

In the Mens 25m Centre Fire Jeremy Kozak, WA, won gold, Colin Whetstone, SA, took silver and Lok Mau Cheug, Macau, took bronze.
