NT too strong for Hoops
Sat, May 14 2011
Arafura basketball stadium was busting at the seams when Northern Territory played Hoops 4 Health in the 2011 Arafura Games women’s final tonight.
Early points saw the Territory team take an unexpected lead against Hoops 4 Health and it was the underdogs who took out the win against the team with Australian squad player and Opal Rohanee Cox.
While the NT had lost against Hoops 4 Health in the preliminary rounds on Wednesday, the young team “stepped up” for their big win in the match for gold.
“It’s great, it’s unbelievable,” NT coach Jason Ivinson said.
“I’ve got goose bumps.
“They had us every game we played against them – to win the final is a great relief.”
Ivinson said his girls had “learnt a lot” during the 2011 Arafura Games basketball competition.
“They’ll take a lot out of it; they really stepped up and played great basketball.
“They truly are the best we have in the Territory.”
In the other final of the night Torres Strait beat the Northern Territory men in a tough match 97-83.
