PNG down South Australia

Sun, May 08 2011

In a replay of the most exciting volleyball match of the 2009 Arafura Games Papua New Guinea beat South Australia today in a heated, close match to open up the 2011 Games competition.
Prior to the clash of the volleyball titans South Australian hitter Craig Watson was optimistic his team would make up for the loss in 2009.

“Our team is pretty good and we beat Timor-Leste 3-0 this morning,” he said.

“We should be able to beat the PNG guys, although their style of volleyball is very unconventional.

“They tend to play really fast and quick balls – something we’re not normally used to play.”

But when it came to the action on the court, South Australia was not strong enough to beat Papua New Guinea.

PNG won in three straight sets, 25-23, 25-22, 25-18.

Earlier today the Papua New Guinea women PNG NCD beat the Northern Territory 3-1.

Tomorrow the Northern Territory men play PNG at 9am.

Volleyball competions will be held at Marrara Indoor stadium from 9am to 3pm.
