PNG score volleyball Gold again

Sat, May 14 2011

In a rematch of the 2009 Arafura Games volleyball finals the Papua New Guinea men’s team today played Macau in the 2011 Gold Medal match.

In a spectacular and tight match PNG once again proved too good for the Macau team and won in three straight sets 25-21, 26-24, 25-21.

“We played the better game,” coach Tommy Lui said. “We’re over the moon.”

“We love our sport and I told the boys to go out there and enjoy themselves – and that’s what they did.

“It was nothing technical, they won because they had fun, they wanted to entertain and play a good game.

“They were out there, laughing and joking.”

After winning Arafura Gold against Macau in 2009 the team was welcomed back to their home town of Vabukori with a week-long party.

“The airport was packed when we arrived, it was over capacity,” Lui said.

“They are just some boys from the village, they are no superstars – but they came home with a gold medal and made their people proud.

“I don’t know what will happen when we arrive at home this time, but it will be big.

“We’ve already had phone calls from home before the game started.”
