Powerlifter misses world mark

Fri, May 13 2011

Mexican powerlifter Amalia Perez Vazquez has missed her chance to break the world record in the 60kg Open Female division.

The 38-year-old failed twice to lift the attempted weight of 136.5kg.

"I am really sad," she said. "I tried my very best."

The powerlifter said she struggled with the conditions and "two strangers at the bar".

"Usually I have my coach at the bar - today, without him, I wasn't 100 per cent confident."

Ms Perez Vazquez said despite failing to break the record, she "loved the Games".

"This is my first time at the Arafura Games and in Darwin and I am fascinated with the organisation, the people and the Games' reputation as World Games.

"I am glad I came here and hopefully I'll be back in 2013 for another fantastic event."

The powerlifter said she was now training for the Panamerican Games in November this year in her home country, Mexico.

"I'll definitely try to break the record again - and I am confident I'll be able to do it at home."
