Rhys too strong in squash

Fri, May 13 2011

In a fast and thrilling match Darwin's Rhys Dowling has won his second gold medal on home turf in the 2011 Arafura Games squash finals.

After winning the men's team finals against New Caledonia the 16-year-old faced Western Australia's David White, 39, in the men’s individual final.

The Australian junior champion lost his first two games against the more experienced Australian Defence Organisation player, but made a great comeback in the last three games, winning 11-6, 11-8 and 11-4.

"After two games I knew I had to stop the errors," he said.

"I had to keep him running to make him tired.

"I knew that's how I could beat him - he's an old man."

The young athlete said he was proud of winning two Arafura gold medals on home turf.

"It's great and it makes me happy, because it will be the last Arafura Games in this squash court - to win gold at home is a good outcome."
