In one of the first competitions of the 2011 Arafura Games the Macau Sepak Takraw team lost against Victoria, despite the enthusiastic support of the country’s Sports Minister and Secretary for Social Affairs and Culture and a delegation of VIP sports officials.
Cheong U, Macau Secretary for Social Affairs and Culture – accompanied by the President of the Macau Sport Development Board and the Deputy Director-General of the Department of Culture and Education – said the delegation of sports officials had come to the Games for “cultural exchange” and with an aim to “strengthen their friendship between Macau and the Northern Territory”.
“Macau first participated in the Arafura Games in 1993 and has developed a longterm friendship with Darwin,” President of the Macau Sport Development Board, Alex Vong Iao Lek, said.
“More than 200 athletes from Macau are competing in 16 sports in the Arafura Games and we wanted to take the chance to not only see our athletes compete, but also learn more about the Games and increase the exchange between the countries,” he said.
“The Games are a great experience for our young athletes and we hope they willperform well.
Macau is playing the Northern Territory today (Saturday) at 1:45pm and Terengganu A tomorrow, Sunday, at 8pm.
