The Singapore air rifle team came to the 2011 Arafura Games with high hopes – but to win 14 gold, 7 silver and 5 bronze medals in 16 events was “more than expected”.

Team manger Eddie Lim said he was “rather proud” of performance of his young shooters.

“We came here to win, but they (the athletes) did exceptionally well,” he said.

10m team and individual gold medal winners Jia-Shuen Wesley Leong and Annabel Leong, said they were “excited” about their wins.

“It’s great to be here at the Games for the first time,” 17-year-old Wesley Leong said.

“To go home with a gold medal is even better.”

In today’s competition Singapore shooters won gold in Womens Air Pistol Teams, 10m Mens Air Teams, 10m Mens Air, Junior Air 60 Teams, Junior Air 40 Women, and Junior Air 40 Womens Teams.
