Arafura Games

Saturday 16 May 2009

  • ‘We had absolute commitment from the girls. This is our fourth time at the Games. The women in the team come from the Army, Navy and Air Force and only come together to play as a team a week before the games.  To play so well is a credit to them.’
Wendy Maxwell, Manager, ADF Women’s Football

  • ‘We held them at half time and passed well.  Our girls never gave up and had lots of heart out there.  It was a hard game and PNG deserve the win.’
Kim Waterhouse, ADO team member, Football. Silver medallists PNG 5 v ADO 1
  • ‘We were more defensive and the attacking and speed in the front was good.  Our preparation was really short before the games but the girls were really disciplined and it’s paid off’
Cathy Agunam, Vice Captain, PNG Football. Gold medallist, PNG -5 vs ADO

  • "It’s a very big win for us getting the Bronze Medal. It’s our first medal from three Arafura Games so we are very happy. We are all friends and we come from different cities, Cairns, Melbourne, Townsville. It was a hard game and ADO is a tough team."
Adam Piszczuk (Southern Cross Stars) Bronze Medallist
Southern Cross Stars won vs Australian Defense

  • “I’m feeling tremendously excited. This is my forth visit to the Games – it was always  Bronze medals before so at last we have our first Gold. It was a tough match but we won with skill and experience against strength and size.”
    Lei Weng Si  captain.
