Opening Ceremony

The Arafura Games Opening Ceremony was held on the evening of Saturday, 9 May 2009 and was a spectacular start to the Arafura Games week of sporting festivities. The Opening Ceremony encompassed the traditions of the Games, celebrating the friendship between sporting neighbours and embracing the multi-cultural nature of the City of Darwin. The program include a Parade of Athletes, formal welcomes and oaths, the lighting of the Flame, an array of entertainment and a spell-binding fireworks display. A crowd of approximately 8000 attended the event.

Closing Ceremony

The Closing Ceremony will be held on the evening of Sunday, 17 May 2009. After a week of games won and lost, the Arafura Games pay tribute to the spectators, officials and emerging champions in a stunning display of friendship and festivities. Competitors in the arena become companions in sport, as players and officials rally for an end of Games party on the lawn of SKYCITY Darwin. The cauldron flames will be extinguished to mark the official closing of the Games. Celebrations will continue with dancing, food and entertainment; marking yet another successful Arafura Games.
