Background
The Arafura Games began in 1991 as the ‘Arafura Sports Festival’ with 1500 participants from seven countries competing in 13 sports. On the eve of the 2009 Games, the Arafura Games is now an international-standard sporting competition. Over the years, tens of thousands of athletes, spectators and officials have been involved, alongside thousands of hardworking volunteers, without whom the Games wouldn’t be possible. For the Arafura Games 2009, a team of more than 1000 dedicated volunteers will be required to help deliver the event.
Each team will have a Team Attache to assist in ensuring our international teams are informed/ looked after during their stay in Darwin. The Team Attaches can assist with assist with competition information, transport and venue information, with recommendations for restaurants and shops for specific dietary needs and general information about the Games. In addition to the Team Attaches, there are numerous volunteers who work across important areas such as accreditation, airport welcome and departure, communications, medal presentations, transport, media and more. Darwin community groups representing different cultural groups are also involved in the Games, providing support functions such as billeting athletes, hosting welcome events and providing interpreter services for our international teams. Service organisations such as Rotary and Lions Clubs as well as sporting clubs assist with various vital roles in the operational aspects of the events including car parking and ushering. Our local youth associations such as the Defence Force Cadets, Scouts and Junior Rangers assist with medal presentations and other important Games functions.

Sport and Games workforce
Our volunteer workforce is divided into two broad categories – the sport workforce and the games workforce. Sport workers will help deliver an international standard sporting competition in 27 sports, eight of which incorporate events for athletes with a disability. Games workers will deliver the Games services roles that ensure the smooth operation of the event.
Games volunteers can choose from plenty of exciting roles, including working in the accreditation or media centre, running information booths, setting up at public locations or meeting and greeting teams as they arrive at Darwin airport. Times are flexible to suit individuals, and no experience is necessary for most roles because full training is provided.
Who is eligible to volunteer?
Generally you must be at least 16. If you’re under 16 and keen to volunteer, contact us as an exception could apply to your case. If you’re under 18, we’ll need your guardian’s permission.
