Up-and-coming sports talent showcased at Arafura Games 2009
From after the Opening Ceremony on Sunday 10 May the stage was set to champion extraordinary performances like the breaking of the world record in the Women’s 200m Ambulant by Victorian AWD sprinter Kelly Cartwright, or Samoan weightlifter Eli Opeloge smashing the Commonwealth Record in the 75kg+ snatch, or better still the surprise victory in Men’s Volleyball of the underdog PNG volleyball team, all of whom hail from a village of less than 1,000 people.

In the name of good sportsmanship and honest endeavour The Arafura Games is a unique event that offers athletes of all races and creeds a platform on which to showcase their abilities.

To maintain a positive direction for the Arafura Games there are 15 member countries from the immediate geographical region that meet on a regular basis to discuss the ongoing health and direction of the Games.

In 2009 the Games attracted competitors from 49 countries, including Northern Ireland, Iran, Kiribati, Korea and one sole entrant from Slovakia who won a gold medal.

Congratulations to all the young men and women who assembled in Darwin in 2009 to compete and share the camaraderie of sporting achievement.

The next Arafura Games are slated for 2011 and will run from 14 – 21 May.
