In 2005 the Australian Paralympic Committee and the Northern Territory Government embarked on an ambitious program which would result in the inclusion of the inaugural Oceania Paralympic Championships within the highly successful Arafura Games in Darwin in May 2007.
More than 300 athletes with a disability attended the first Oceania Paralympic Championships. The support of the Federal and Northern Territory governments was essential to the event's success and helped make it one of the year's highlights. Strong international interest has been registered among the membership of the International Paralympic Committee, and the Oceania Open Paralympic Championships has the potential to become the most significant multi-sport, multi-disability event in this region of the world.
